Custom IO Board designers?

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi folks,

Apologies if this is wholly inappropriate but I am a software person with absolutely zero embedded hardware knowledge. I was hoping to find someone who could help me get a prototype IO board for an RPi compute module built. To be honest I have no idea how I'd even go about finding such a person. I was also hoping that this forum could potentially point me in the right direction!

Apologies again if this is inappropriate content, and thanks for any advice offerred!

If you are thinking of  a commercial project you are welcome to contact me privately (email address is in my profile). Others who hang out on E14 could help you as well.

If you want free advice and to do a lot yourself you can get it on E14 but you'll need to go public with a lot more detail which may not suit you.

    Hi Rob,

This is something we can help you where here at Newark/Element14.  I'll send you a contact request through the community and we can discuss your needs offline.

    Cheers,

    Hi Rob,

What functions and what complexity are you looking for?

    Hey folks,

I'm looking for a compute style (basic Von Neumann machine with Linux support - cpu, ram and storage) board with dual wifi adapters. If I ever did get this to something that was vaguely commercially viable (lots of software developement to be done) it'd be cool to make a small device with battery / usb charger port. To be honest thats a very very long way away. That said I'm sort of curious as to how I could go about this and what the expected costs would be.

Based on the advice I'm getting so far I'm planning to a) base the prototype on a Raspberry Pi Model B+ with two wifi adaptors and B) start playing around with Eagle to try and get a feel for what I'm doing.

One other thing I should do it post to the main forum for advice on the solo approach. I'm quite curious to know what a device like this would cost to get manufactured. It'd need to be at most about $60 per unit to make any sense at all tbh.

I've actually been looking for how to design not just a PCB with connectors, but with other things the compute would be able to use such as a real time clock, SD card, hardware switches,

My problem is I'm a complete novice here looking at how to do very complex things. This is mostly because I want to build a tablet, but tablets tend to be very disposable. I want a tablet wher eI can replace everything, including the brain of the thing when a new edition pops up.

I just know I don't have the knowledge to make it happen. Where do I look to learn, or am I being too ambitious?

You could try doing a search for Spark: The DIY Modular Tablet

Or you could wait for the Click-Arm One
