i2c stop working

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hello!

I am trying to solve my problem with i2c on a Raspberry Pi model B.

I have build myself a little weather station with some sensors connected via i2c.

It was working flawlessly for 3 months but now it suddenly stopped.

I made sure the /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf and /etc/modules configuration files are still as they were.

The i2c_dev and i2c_bcm2708 modules are loaded after reboot but i2cdetect gives me:

Error: Could not open file `/dev/i2c-1' or `/dev/i2c/1': No such file or directory

I tried apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, rpi-update, ... but no luck so far.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks for any ideas.

If everything was working fine and then something fails, it sounds like a hardware problem[*].  I would try downloading a fresh OS image to a different SD card and see if that's the problem.  I think most SD cards are made for consumers and don't last as long as they should.

[*] I assume you've done obvious thinks like rebooting in case there was a memory leak or heap fragmentation, which are other ways things can fail after months of continuous operation.

hardware problem... thats what I am afraid of.

last time it took me couple of days to set up everything to work properly.

with rolling back kernel version to 3.12.35+ I was able to restore i2c functions but then Pi starts to freeze after sudo modprobe -r i2c_bcm2708 / sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708 which I need in order to read all my sensors data.

it is not a hardware problem. I get the same problem on two different Raspberry Pi units that i preformed updates on today. They have both installes new kernel versions that handel devices differently than previously and that are incompatable with the installed drivers and software.

    Good night.
