Has Anyone perhaps done a RFID Race Timing or similar project in the past?

Has Anyone perhaps done a RFID Race Timing or similar project in the past? If so, will you please share? I am a Race Director for a community totally free timed race, and would like to put together a very inexpensive RFID Race Timing Kit that could be replicated all over our hosted runs. I would essentially like to use Raspberry Pi and or Arduino and associated accessories and components.image

If you haven't read this Wikipedia article already, I would suggest looking closely at the history section, where the use of different tag technologies is discussed. It would seem that the tag choice will depend on the speed of the subjects being measured. Are you racing snails or Formula One cars?

Thank you Paul Ellison for the reference. I have done some research in this regard, but all current out of the box systems are just way too expensive. Hence, the attempt to produce a very much more inexpensive custom built system.

Thank you once again for your contribution though.

Absolutely understand, and appreciate the sense of achievement in making something. The area of discussion I was hoping to point you towards was choice of tag, i.e. Low-Frequency (125/134kHz) vs high frequency (13.56MHz) vs UHF. There is also a brief discussion on collision avoidance (tags not runners) that could be helpful.
