Raspberry Pi imager allows configuration of headless OS

Jan Cumps
Jan Cumps over 3 years ago

I usually install a headless Raspberry OS on a Pi. I don't use them as desktop/GUI devices.
In the past, getting these activated was a bit involved.

  • ssh disabled
  • wifi not active
  • wrong keyboard for non-US

To get this set up, I'd usually connect the Pi wired to my network, and put a file called ssh in the root.
Then, I'd check my router for the IP, and use a terminal to set the wifi and keyboard.
Then I'd reboot and start with the other configurations.

Today I Learned that this can now be done via the Raspberry Pi imager.
When you select OS and SD Card, there's an option box.
You can now set the parameters above, and more, up front when creating the image.

Do it before starting to write, because these are set as part of that process.

That's all - just wanted to share a new learning.
Since I stumbled on it, I found many tutorials (like this one) that explain it.

Awesome find and equally awesome share JC!

I have setup ssh and wifi by inserting files in the /boot directory before first startup. I will give this a try. In a few years I will forget how it was done.

I've attached some Linux screenshots. Looks to be slightly different than your version.

After the operating system is selected a gear appears. Select the gear and a scroll menu of options are made available.

    How cool is that!

    Thanks for that info, Jan!

I don't do it very often, but it does get cumbersome to dig out the extra HDMI cable and do the gymnastics around the back of my monitor to hook things up, and then I usually put off dealing with it. Smile
