Raspberry Pi 3 Model B not work anymore

coder_hasib
coder_hasib 25 days ago

Hi, I have bought Raspberry Pi 3 Model B a few years ago. At first, it works well and then it was unused for years. When I try to power it on it shows only a red led. I have tried several ways. But not work. Last night I have tried to power using Xiaomi Redmi 10 mobile charger, but now it shows no led. I have gone to a mechanic for a test and he said, the power is not flowing all over the circuit but 5v is still getting. So, the device is dead?

I believe you need to make sure you're using a proper power supply that can guarantee 5 volts and 2.5 amps, which's what the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B really needs. A mobile phone charger may not be able…

I believe you need to make sure you're using a proper power supply that can guarantee 5 volts and 2.5 amps, which's what the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B really needs. A mobile phone charger may not be able to guarantee this.

If you're careful, and you still cannot power it on via USB, you can try connecting to the GPIO pins of 5v and ground (GND) and see if the Pi 3 will power on that way, but make sure it's a clean 5v supply that doesn't exceed this amount as there's no protections on the GPIO pins.

If you're unsure of what pins to connect to, check out  Raspberry Pi 3 Model B GPIO 40 Pin Block Pinout

I have no idea what you have tried and what state the quality is of the devices you have tried, so we can assume if you cannot verify it, then yes the 'charger' or the power supply you've connected it to has the potential to damage the device.

    The Pi 3?

If you can't return it to where you bought it from, and you can identify the parts that have failed, and you have the right tools, then possibly. That may be more an Ask an Expert Forum type question if you supply photo's and ask how to identify what may have failed, if it still powers on via the GPIO then that narrows it down.

It can't be stressed enough how good, clean power is so critical to reliable operation of the Pi's. I have switched to only using Raspberry Pi power supplies. At first I used inexpensive parts supply house 5VDC 3amp supplies with some success. Later as I purchased different supplies strange things started happening. I made the decision to purchase the manufacture supply and have had no problems since.

I have some concern about trying other supplies to find one that works. Let's hope it is just a poor power supply and the other attempts didn't cause issues.

I am afraid that it is already gone. The same thing happened to my Raspberry Pi 3B many years ago. I worked with that and made many projects. Then one day, I found that it was not booting at all and getting extremely hot. Finger burning hot. Had to toss that away after so many attempts to get that working again :(

coder_hasib  If you threw it in the bin, go pull it out.  I danced a similar dance a few years ago - including digging it out of the trash.

Reflash your SD card with a new image of the Raspberry Pi OS and see if that doesn't change things.  It did for me.  The new image caused it to work, but I can't remember why.

    Best of luck.

Don't you just love technology. Not especially when it goes bad.

Retry with original power supply to see if RED LED comes back. If there is a hot spot, try to identify which component it is. Try reformatting the SD card (SD card format SW tool)  and reloading with newest Raspian https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/ and retry. Can also try using another SD card and setting the current one aside.
