Welcome to the New Raspberry Pi 5 - Is it what you hoped?

We were told that there would be no Raspberry Pi 5 in 2023.

In fact it was said in a lot of places that was the case.

It turns out, that was a lie :D

 Raspberry Pi 5 8GB 

And what a delicious one it is.

• 2.4GHz quad-core, 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, with 512KB L2 caches and a 2MB shared L3 cache
• VideoCore VII GPU
• LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM (4GB and 8GB SKUs available at launch)
• 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi
• Bluetooth 5.0 / Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
• Micro SD card slot, with support for high-speed SDR104 mode
• 2 × USB 3.0 ports, supporting simultaneous 5Gbps operation
• 2 × USB 2.0 ports
• Gigabit Ethernet, with PoE+ support (requires PoE+ HAT)
• 2 × 4 lane MIPI camera/display transceivers
• PCIe 2.0 x1 interface for fast peripherals
• 5V/5A DC power (PD enabled)
• Raspberry Pi standard 40-pin header
• Real-Time Clock (RTC), powered from external battery
• On-board power button!!

I cannot wait to get a hold of one, and I'm amazed that finally, we have need for a heatsink and fan, which comes with thermal pads!

Have you been waiting for a new Raspberry Pi? Perhaps you were content with the existing one? I'll be interested in putting it through its paces.

  • I was stunned by the power requirements. 5 amps ? Wow.  I need to see some power requirements benchmarks.

    Phoronix already has some benchmarks. From the RPI 4 perspective, it's a big improvement. From a Orange PI 5 standpoint, not so much.  The RPI only wins because of the strong community and, let's face it, they start it all. 

    Otherwise, I was expecting to see some bigger improvements, like an nvme native interface (without having to use a HAT), for example. native POE would be great. And some other memory options, like 16GB (doesn't mean it can still be available in the future).

    Let's see if the chips shortage doesn't ruin stock availability.
