I am having trouble with my Pi-Desktop computer kit SATA bridge

I have a Pi-Desktop case with the SATA bridge, and it no longer sees the /dev/sda target.  I am unsure if it is a bad SSD or a bad bridge.  I don't have another mSATA slot to check it.  I have poked around, but I can't find a likely piece of hardware that would seem to be the bridge.  I have tried lsusb, lshw, etc.  Is there away I can inspect the bridge to see if it is operating?

    No errors from dmesg.  I did try with and without the bridge, but I didn't spot any differences.  That does not necessarily mean there are none.  I did realize it might be because the pidesktop-base deb file is not installed.  It's giving me some errors apparently because it was written in Python 2, which is deprecated.  I am tryingto fix the errors, but one of them has me puzzled.
