Raspberry pi 3 wont launch I think?

I just got a raspberry pi 3 for my computer class and my teacher installed Noobs onto it for us. So i brought it home to use and i set everything up on my laptop so i can download raspbian from noobs so i can use it. But i had my sd card in hdmi cords in and my micro usb cord in and nothing showed up when i plugged it in to turn it on but nothing happened? what do I do please help Fast!?!?

  • Hi Devin,

     

    It might be one or more of several things.

    Could you confirm how you got the software image onto the SD card? There is a procedure (see raspberrypi.org) that needs to be followed, you cannot just drag and drop or copy/paste the file onto the SD card, that won't work.

    Secondly what is the micro USB connected to? It needs to go to a power supply capable of at least 2A or more. You can't plug it into the laptop (well, you can but needs some thought and not all laptop USB ports will support it (most will not support it).

  • I assume your teacher installed Noobs on it and booted it up, successfully,  at school. If it won't work at home, the only different factor is the power supply.

    Many people assume that a power supply producing 5 Volts will result in 5 Volts appearing at the Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately, the Pi 2 and Pi 3 take more current (Amps) to work than the original Pi. The flow of that current through the resistance of the USB power 'cord' loses some of the voltage. If you don't want to invest in the official power supply, you should be able to use a standard 5 Volt power supply rated at about 2 Amps output and with a USB socket, but use the shortest USB power cord you can find. Anything longer than a quarter of a metre (250 cm) is unlikely to work.

     

    You are unlikely to get it to work from a computer USB port unless the cable is shorter still.
