I even use the Raspberry Pi Imaging Utility to load other images on SD cards.  I think it's awesome.

Haven't had much luck with the documentation from the raspberrypi site and neither with the os downloads; they don't download as zip folder to extract the files and when I do download them they have a different file format. Even installed the Linux raspi imager. Maybe it's just my outdated windows pc

Later Raspberry Pi OS versions were compressed with XZ format and not Zip.

If you are downloading manually, then you will likely need a utility tool like 7-Zip to uncompress them after downloading.

BD, I seem to recall Pi Imager takes care of the compression by not burdening the user or am I thinking of another imager.

Yes, I think you are correct.

If you follow the official documentation, then they recommend Pi Imager these days, so shouldn't have these issues.

If you have a reliable internet connection and use the current version of Pi Imager the software will take care of the download and install.

This link for the Raspberry Pi OS.

    https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/

Select a download. You can then point Pi Imager to the file by selecting custom and picking the file you have downloaded. You do not have to adjust extensions. Pi Imager is looking after that for you providing you are getting the software from the official site.
