I even use the Raspberry Pi Imaging Utility to load other images on SD cards.  I think it's awesome.

Haven't had much luck with the documentation from the raspberrypi site and neither with the os downloads; they don't download as zip folder to extract the files and when I do download them they have a different file format. Even installed the Linux raspi imager. Maybe it's just my outdated windows pc

Later Raspberry Pi OS versions were compressed with XZ format and not Zip.

If you are downloading manually, then you will likely need a utility tool like 7-Zip to uncompress them after downloading.

BD, I seem to recall Pi Imager takes care of the compression by not burdening the user or am I thinking of another imager.

Yes, I think you are correct.

If you follow the official documentation, then they recommend Pi Imager these days, so shouldn't have these issues.

If you have a reliable internet connection and use the current version of Pi Imager the software will take care of the download and install.

This link for the Raspberry Pi OS.

    https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/

Select a download. You can then point Pi Imager to the file by selecting custom and picking the file you have downloaded. You do not have to adjust extensions. Pi Imager is looking after that for you providing you are getting the software from the official site.

*** brodies Ive tried all of those options already. The 7-zip uninstalling and reinstalling Pi imager l. Used the custom os option with the file I downloaded from he raspberrypi site. Also tried the os options the imager comes with none of them worked. Eventually the imager would freeze and crash. Tried updating to the newer version but nothing came up. So I started looking into my PC hardware driver their all out of date and for some reason I can't run the windows OS update and drivers also don't update. Tried all those options to on a hp Google chrome book but was unsuccessful

Your PC doesn't sound too healthy. If you are using the same micro SD card, it could be an issue with it.

Perhaps buy a certified micro SD card with the OS pre-installed to get started with.

I should mention though before all of this happening. I think I messed up the flashed SD card that came with the raspberrypi and couldn't get it to boot up  took me a while but somehow I was able to format and flash the SD card with the pi imager using the bootloader firmware and the noobs os.to fix any problems I might have donne but didn't work either. I just ended up buying a new pre-flashed noobs OS SD card and booted fine, followed the documentation step but step to not make mistakes. Did all the update and upgarde requirements like the documentation states and installed a few packages for the design purposes I was gana use it for created a back up was running fine for a while then performance started slowing down and glitching even with the regular terminal sudo update command. Also don't know if I downloaded to and installed to many softwares or packages but when I tried upgrading the books is to the new bookworm is it was in the process but just went black, probably fried the internal memory of the pi lol. Tried formatting and reflashing all 3 SD cards one with the bootloader firmware, one with the noobs OS and the other with book worm. And none worked now my PC having doing a FAT32 format from so many attempts

My Pi Imager is down at the moment. After the last Ubuntu upgrade Pi Imager screen flashes on an immediately goes off. Multiple reloads of the software doesn't help. 1.9.6 is the version. I did a load of Etcher to image a SD card.  balena-etcher_2.1.4 is working on ubuntu.

The Pi Imager issue just started today after an latest update. Hoping someone in Pi world gets on it. The autoconfig file is great to not have to keep remembering stuff.
