Raspberry Pi 5 randomly reboots when powering an SSD over USB

I’m using a Raspberry Pi 5 with an NVMe SSD connected through a USB 3 enclosure. The Pi works normally when the SSD is disconnected, but occasionally reboots when the SSD is under sustained read/write load.I purchased this one in Italy, so it might function differently.

The power supply is rated at 27W, and the issue seems more likely to happen when the CPU is also under load. Has anyone seen this with the Raspberry Pi 5, and would using a higher-rated USB-C supply or a powered USB hub be the recommended solution?

I'm using the M.2 HAT+ to access the NVMe SSD (uses around 5W on R/W, running SLM's) , it works without any problem. If the power supply you're using doesn't have the 5V 5A profile, it's also a cause of the issue you're facing.

Yes, thank you. This's the particular USB-PD profile that the Pi 5 is fussy about.

Yes, thank you. This's the particular USB-PD profile that the Pi 5 is fussy about.

The official Pi 5 supply is exactly the correct one to use with the required USB-PD profile. It should be enough.

Thanks. Must be some other incompatibility then; I just couldn’t get to the bottom of it and because I was using it for HA, which I got thoroughly #}%&£@ off with, I gave up on it. At least until I find another project suitable for the PI.

The problem might be with the enclosure, sometimes they do not expect higher power pull which has changed depending on what PCIe standard they expect/support.

I'm not that confident in all PI5 supplies being the same. The 5A sucker is much larger and weightier than the typical Pi power supply. I have a variety of PS kicking around and the size I noticed.

I'm not saying you are wrong but PS for Pi's has always been contentious issue for me.
