Here is the datasheet JHD162A ... - Datasheet Search Engine Download which should give details on usage. Better yet, I found a blog for the Arduino using Using a JHD162A LCD Screen with an Arduino Uno . Surprisingly they claim compatibility with HD44780! 
So did you double check your wiring? Is the software you used match where you got it? Without details I cannot guess what failed.
