PI3 Question

Hello, I recently purchased a PI3 to use in one of my existing projects and the initial research I did led me to believe that the PI2 could be upgraded to PI3 by swapping out SD cards. I got a PI3 from Adafruit and it would not work (4 slow blink followed by 4 fast blink ACT). I asked them and they said that the PI3 has recently gone through a change that makes it not compatible with the PI2 OS. The reason why I am asking is because my project is long and complicated and I would not want to have to redo the entire thing to go to PI3 since I made the project on PI2. Any help feedback would be most appreciated.

With newer ARM processing cores, the firmware often needs updates. Here is what I would try. First take the same SD card nd put back to the Pi 2. Then issue the following:
df -h                              (check if you have enough space on card)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade     (option at this point since your software may not agree)
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade     (firmware updates)

Now try card and should work. If not you may want to consider the upgrade also. BTW, a backup of your card would be worth the time in case it fails due to lack of space or internet problem.

If it is a NOOBS SD card do you need to also update the NOOBS software as per Pi 1 -> Pi 2 ?

Would be nice to have feedback on this question if it is a solution. It was just such an old post I wonder too if this applies to P3.

You haven't said yet if you are using a NOOBS/Raspbian Jessie SD card.

Some more recent forum entries from 2016 suggesting that you need to update the NOOBS files as well as Raspbian going from Pi 2 -> Pi 3

I'm using NOOBS sorry.
Thank you for that link but I just got done with that one too. No luck. The only way I can get out of the looping 4 blinks that way is to replace two of those files with new (recovery.elf and recovery7.img). Any other file replacements do nothing. When I replace those two files it comes up but with a new NOOBS install.
