PI3 Question

With newer ARM processing cores, the firmware often needs updates. Here is what I would try. First take the same SD card nd put back to the Pi 2. Then issue the following:

df -h                              (check if you have enough space on card)

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade     (option at this point since your software may not agree)

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade     (firmware updates)

Now try card and should work. If not you may want to consider the upgrade also. BTW, a backup of your card would be worth the time in case it fails due to lack of space or internet problem.

I'm not sure where you got the impression from but the Pi 2 and Pi 3 use different ARM cores in the SOC. The Pi 2 is a 32 bit quad-core ARM and the Pi 3 is a 64 bit quad-core ARM

although most of the current OSs run it in 32 bit mode. Most of the differences between the two should be "hidden" in the OS which is why you need to upgrade to the latest version

when running the Pi 3. The good news is that most of the hardware outside the ARM core in the SOC is the same and any software written to use that hardware should continue to

work although it may occasionally require some small tweaks to do so.

So I used the cloned SD chip as backup to my PI2 and the clone started up and upgraded all perfectly in the PI2. 

After done, I put the SD chip in the PI3 and I get the same result.  4 slow flashes followed by 4 faster flashes. 

I will be getting another PI3 in the mail today so I will be able to see if it is hardware or software problem I hope.  I will post back with that result.  Thanks again,

I do not understand the impression you think I got?

I was simply using a PI2 and thought it would be nice to upgrade hardware to PI3.  Did research and on these forums others said you could go from PI2 to PI3 hardware.  I found I could not which is why I am posting.  If it was just doing the software upgrades, understandable.  I thought mine was pretty up to date but it took more so it was worth that attempt for sure.

If it is a NOOBS SD card do you need to also update the NOOBS software as per Pi 1 -> Pi 2 ?

Well shoot.. Got the new P3 and same result.  The SD card works fine in P2 but not P3 after all the suggested updating on two now.  4 slow blinks followed by 4 fast blinks.

Adafruit says the newer P3 revision isn't backwards compatible now even though the earlier releases of P3 were.  Is this really true?  I can see how for most people this wouldn't be a problem but for those of us with many days of setup on our systems will this not be a further option in these newer releases of P3?

Also just tried rpi-update with no success.

Would be nice to have feedback on this question if it is a solution.  It was just such an old post I wonder too if this applies to P3.

Are you helpful at this point?  I wouldn't just make something up.  There are several people posting successful swap outs after doing updating different ways.  Here are a couple:

You haven't said yet if you are using a NOOBS/Raspbian Jessie SD card.
