Pi media center, good place to start?

If the title didn't give it away.

Would a Raspberry Pi media center be a good place to start for a beginner? This would be my first project with a Pi, and I haven't done anything like this before.

A Pi media centre is often a bad choice for a first project. Once it's setup you run the risk of just watching TV, making it your last project as well.
