What does it happens after you insert the dongle in one of the USB of your PI ?
(Please, provide what PI model and the operating system you have installed on it).
Supposing that you have this issue with the Raspbian distribution on a PI 2, first of all from a terminal execute the lsusb command. You should expect to see your dongle detected anyway, with a response similar to the following:
