Professional and Industrial Users of Raspberry Pi

Hi all!

I would love to hear your thoughts on using the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ in Professional and Industrial Use Cases.

The New Raspberry Pi 3 B+ has been intentionally built to make it easier/less expensive to be signed off with simplified Radio Module Conformity and the new PoE hat on its way, allowing for headless operation, Power over Ethernet and, Boot over ether net.

Do you use your Raspberry Pi in an industrial use (IIoT)?

Have you built the Raspberry Pi into a product? Was it easy to do?

What are your thoughts on Raspberry Pi's efforts to reduce time and money making the RF area meet Modular certification?

If you have not? What is deterring you?

New RF  Conformity documentation:

Interview with Ben and Roger

Discussing the new board and benefits of the RF module and PoE.

Eben Upton and Roger Thornton Interview: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+

PoE Hat (Pre-order available now):

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus (B+) PoE (Power Over Ethernet) Hat

The official Power over Ethernet (PoE) add-on board for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+! Use this HAT to power a Raspberry Pi via an Ethernet cable, removing the need for a separate power supply, an ideal solution for embedded and IoT projects. For Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ and onwards, an 802.3af compliant POE injector, switch, or router device is required (not included).

  • Power over Ethernet 802.3af compliant
  • Power over Ethernet Boot (PXE Boot)
  • Class 2 device
  • Fully isolate Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS)
  • 36-56V Input Voltage
  • 5V Output Voltage
  • Supplies up to 2.5A
  • Fan Control
  • Plug-and-play compatibility with Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+

Best of all, it fits within the official Raspberry Pi Case!

    Hey Phil

At this point I am considering using it in an industrial mode for 10000+ different locations.

However I need to case it, and I am wondering the following:

Pi3B+ documentation says "it should not be covered"

The question is : is the board still FCC and CE compliant when used together with the Official pink&white Element14 case?

Thanks in advance for your answer. It is a key element of my selection process

    Cheers

    Phil

I think the one major shortcoming with the Raspberry Pi is its use of SD cards for storage.  I use a handful of Rasberry Pi's (misc. generations) in my home network and have noticed that SD cards last about 18 months (running 24x7) under heavy use.  I haven't yet tried the "boot from SSD" method yet so cannot make statements about that.  That said, the Raspberry Pi does make a good home automation controller (Node Red + Zigbee + Zwave) and alarm clock (RadioShark + Bluetooth speakers).

I assume that's what the compute module is for.  It's more robust, and less hobbyist that the mainstream models.  You can develop on the hobby model and port it to the computer module.  If/when they come out with a 3B+ version, it will be quite powerful.

I use a 3/B+ with the “official” 7” MT display for implementation of new storage subsystems, compute nodes, and vSphere at customer sites.

Uses a combination of custom scripts that I wrote, along with PowerShell and PowerCLI for ARM.
