Raspberry Pi Zero - Your First Impressions

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 9 years ago

So, big news today, eh? The all new, super-slim, super-small Raspberry Pi Zero.

We've got all the tech specs, we've compared it to the other Raspberry Pis, we've got an FAQ running, and we've even had a go at turning it into a retro games console (quite successfully, I might add!).

So what are your first impressions? What sort of projects do you envisage it being useful for?

Tell us below!

The first impression is positive with a "- - " in front image You well know that the first thing after a linux installation is sudo apt-get update + sudo apt-get upgrade. Without considering that almost any compatible HAT that it is supposed I already have in-home to try on this machine needs its own packages downloaded, as well as adding some software from the repositories...

So, if there is not way to have this device connected to the Internet without buying an add-on it is a damn issue, just because it is a Linux system. If there is - as I suppose and hope - with some easy software configuration through the USB IMHO it is the case to put it in full evidence.

    Enrico

    I was quite surprised.

They aren't actually in stock yet but I've ordered a couple.

In stock now apparently ...at least an hour or so ago when I ordered them ... Unless they are lying of course?!

You only seem to have this available as a bundle for £11+VAT, but the point (according to Raspberry Pi) is that it should be $5. Will you be selling the board alone?

Well, I've got 6 copies of the MagPi magazine, now all I need to do is get them home safely.

    First Impression: wow, it's tiny.

I'm going to need to get busy with the soldering iron to make microUSB to USB converters (or cheap leads from china I guess).

I'd suggest updating the SD card in a Pi2 and then transferring it to the zero afterwards.

(6 Pi Zero's but only 1 will be mine, the others will find good homes).
