Are You Ready To Build A Project with the Pocket IO? I Got 5 to Giveaway

rscasny
rscasny over 8 years ago

Back in April, I wrote a blog asking the community what they would build with the PocketIO from Maxim Integrated. Some people responded.

Now, I've learned I am getting 5 of them. And the supplier would like to sponsor 5 projects.

If you are still interested and are available, please comment below.

If you didn't suggest a project in the original blog, please provide me some idea of what you would build. A summary of the project.

For technical information on the Pocket IO, go here.

Thanks.

That is very generous rscasny Thanks for following up. I will endeavor to post a picture of some of the swag in an interesting location or a tech scenario.

    Hi Randall,

I've already wrote about a possible project applied here where I live.

If I have one of these in my hand [...] It will be very interesting to replicate this approach with a modern view and a better and faster hardware, optimised data flow and a more accurate sampling analysis. The availability of this device with a wide set of differentiated I/O ports and the possibility to communicate via BLE and WiFi seems the optimal PLC device for fast and easy customization on different kind of work-areas.

In the meanwhile I have also pointed on at least three different possible environments where I can make a real-world test project for this stuff. If my idea sounds good I am still very interested as this opens a lot of opportunities especially integrating the concept with the IoT and some sensors.

This looks like an interesting piece of kit, I missed your post back in April as I was on holiday at the time so didn't know anything about it until I just went and read up on it when I saw this post. There's so many of these types of boards that I'd like to get hold of an experiment with but I have too many projects in various states of incompleteness at the moment so I really need to focus on getting some of those complete. It'll be interesting to see what people come up with for this though image

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

Just floating an idea here.... the company where I work often sponsors projects at local colleges and universities. In particular we sometimes sponsor mechatronics students to build something useful for our business. Would element14  and Maxim be interested in co-sponsoring such projects with hardware like this module? Of course it takes a couple of semesters to see results, so that is a consideration.

The supplier did give me a deadline per se. Let me check. I think it's a good idea.

I'm still up for the challenge. Proposal stays the same though I have had some time allow the idea to evolve.

    Thanks

    Hi rscasny

If I'm not too late for it, I would like to put my proposal forward for testing the Pocket IO. The project I would be using it for is a prototype/proof-of-concept for a fish farming automation control station. Basically the station needs to receive input from a series of sensors (temperature, water level, luminosity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates), compare them against the desired production reference model and, if any reading is out of the desired range, take corrective actions by controlling several actuators (water pumps, heater element, water oxygenator). It would also collect the data for logging and be connected to a display, to show the real-time readings from the sensors. Could I ask what sort of deadline is the supplier thinking of? Thank you.

    Fabio.

    Fabio,

    You are not too late.

Just for everybody interested in this:

I posted a blog awhile ago on what you would build with he Pocket IO. This blog garnered a handful of ideas that i brought back to the supplier. Then recently, they wanted to act upon the project and give me 5 kits to give away. Once I heard that, I sent out a follow up blog. I wasn't sure that the initial responders were available so I encouraged others to offer their ideas. I will aggregate the ideas and submit them to the supplier. I will annotate the original ones. The supplier will make the final decision as usual. If you are given a Pocket IO for a project, I'd like to get maybe three blogs from 3. I don't want to overburden you. blog 1-- initial impressions; blog 2-project progress report; blog 3 -- present the final build. I'd be open to any other ideas as well.

The last time I commented on this project, I was collecting project descriptions and getting ready to send them to the supplier who had offered me 5 free units to give to people. Then, Workshopshed made the comment that the Pocket IO uses the Edison, which is going to be discontinued. It made me come to a screeching halt.

So I went back to the supplier and asked them. My liaison didn't know the answer off hand. She went back to her team. It took a bit but they sent me an apology and something to the effect that since the Pocket IO uses the Edison, which will be discontinued, they will have to suspend things. I don't really blame them. They surely didn't know Intel was going to pull the Edison. But I was bummed out that I asked people to take their time and offer project ideas.

After thinking about it, the best I could do was offer a consolation prize. So I went to our storeroom and gathered a list of products that were either left over from RoadTests (new) or are not being used. So, if you participated in this "project," select 1 item from the list below and message me at rscasny with the name of it and your mailing address, phone, email and I'll send it to you:
