Are you Interested in Roadtesting the 96Boards ON Semiconductor Dual Camera Mezzanine?

I had a meeting this week and the new 96Boards ON Semiconductor Dual Camera Mezzanine by AVNET was being considered for a roadtest.

This 96Boards mezzanine card features two Polight IAScompatible imaging modules based on imaging sensors from ON Semiconductor. These sensors interface to an AP1302 imaging coprocessor. By using the 96Boards standard, this card could be easily prototyped with the Ultra96-V2 platform. This kit simplifies the complex process of developing with imaging sensors.

MIPI-CSI2 is widely used in the consumer industry for high-speed communications from host processor to image sensors, but many image sensor modules have varying connector formats which can lead to difficulties with experimenting with different camera modules. The Imager Access System (IAS) image sensor module format from ON Semiconductor helps solve this problem and enables the following:

- Ease of Design-In: OEMs do not have to source lens or explore module vendors

- Decreases time to market by enabling low-touch design

- Prior imaging system expertise is not required since IAS is a plug-and-play solution

It works with the Ultra96-V2, so that would probably be included in this roadtest.

Ultra96 V2

I want to gauge the interest on the element14 community for this roadtest. Please vote below. Providing a comment on what you would do with this gear would also be helpful. Thanks. (More info by going here: 96Boards ON Semiconductor Dual Camera Mezzanine )

rscasny This seems a very nice pair indeed. Very well interested in trying this dual camera stereo setup on an Ultra96-V2 for depth sensing and subsequent obstacle avoidance along with a ROS powered control…

I've already bought one and plan to blog about it when I get a chance. I'm busy with work and the second part of my Eclypse Z7 road test at the moment. My first impressions: It's not obvious the cameras…

I expect to provide more information the closer I  get to launching to the roadtest. But thanks for commenting. I'll see if I can find the info you talked about.

Really powerful board, but duo camero serves demo purpose only.

    Interesting product.

I am interested, but just not up to the challenge.

I hope we get some good road test reports out of this divice.

The card looks interesting bit i also found there was very little info. I suppose schematics specifies all that, but I also was wondering about sensors and what resolutions and framwrates could be achieved

Ya... Since cant afford a stereo camera, had to make a custom one.

There was nothing to hold the cameras together in place while testing and all image

Just found the Meccano piece lying around and fixed the 2 cameras on it with screws from their holders.

Dirty, but it served the purpose.....

    image

Also fixed a sufficiently long metal piece behind the cameras connecting both so that they won't change their position/angles during testing... image

Surprisingly, that Meccano piece was the right size for the setup image

Wouldn't be able to do the roadtest but intellectually would be interested in the stereo camera aspect.

out of curiousity, what kind of performance are you getting out of your setup?  specifically frame rate and resolution.  also, how much heat is the FPGA generating?  working on  a similar project with other hardware, want to see if this might be able to compete...

I've already bought one and plan to blog about it when I get a chance. I'm busy with work and the second part of my Eclypse Z7 road test at the moment.

    My first impressions:

    • It's not obvious the cameras are monochrome. I actually bought it without realising this. It makes sense for image processing so that's fine, but it's not mentioned anywhere that I can see.
    • There's a connector that fits the Pcam5C so this may allow other (colour?) cameras to be used with the Ultra96. Nothing documented though.
    • Software support is not there yet. I've got a beta copy, so it's definitely on the way. Also, Adam Taylor has a project on Hackster.io to get you started.
    • It's not easy to get on and off. A combination of a stiff low speed header with a delicate high speed header and cameras make it awkward.

Also, beware ordering one direct from Avnet if you're in the UK. I expected to pay tax, but DHL don't hold back on other fees! It might be worth waiting for resellers such as Farnell to stock it.

We are a design house working closely together with Avnet/Silica in Germany doing also projects in the area of video processing.

Currently we are preparing hardware and FPGA designs for two medical customers and are looking for a suitable hardware platform for evaluation and prototyping.

This solution seems a perfect fit and therefore I would be very interested in supporting you on the roadtest.
