The parts for a printer are relatively easy to come by - steppers and such can be found in many types of old ink-jet printers, etc. The support rods will be a little harder to find although you can use roller-skate bearings for many designs needing sliders (Delta) or axis separation (Polar). Many designs can use printed spindles and braided fishing line to eliminate the need for toothed belts and gears. The parts that are most difficult to make for yourself will be the extruder/hot end set and the electronics - these are most often simply migrated to the next build since they are fairly standard at the current state of the art. You can build those yourself using an Arduino Mega, RAMPS-equivalent board and some Pololu-equivalent drivers. The power supply and limit switches can be obtained from a surplus computer or similar sources.Paul's suggestion ot get with your local hackerspace is a good plan.
