Painted 3D Printed Squirrel

summerella_nonadmin
summerella_nonadmin over 11 years ago

fustiniadmin was kind enough to print me up a cute little squirrel, then stick it in acetone for about 30 minutes to smooth it out.  We had long wondered what they would look like painted, so over the weekend I whipped out my (giant) collection of nail polish and painted this little guy a metallic teal.

I really like it. It smooths out the lines nicely and give it a good feel. What do you think??

He has an aceton-ed gummy bear I'm painting later this week.....

Acetone baths make the parts look as though injection molding was used. This is also a great way to clean off any artifacts that is left on the part after printing. Nate

Nate, Very true regarding acetone baths. I have a small platform to ensure proper handling of small 3D printed objects - just attach a small off-center motor (I used the vibrational element out of an old…

FYI - I'll put my recommendation for Ultimachine PLA filament.  I was having a real headache with two 1KG spools I bought from another company.  I won 1 pound of blue from Ultimachine at the Midwest RepRap Fest and it is working very well.  The terrible green Yoda fails are a distant memory now image

    Drew

Ultimachine has some great products.  I have used them countless times over the years.  Great to work with and very quick responses with questions.  You do have to be careful with who you get filament from.  I've had some with bubbles and another with way to much moisture.  I've even seen some images online of large chucks of debris in them.

At the Midwest RepRap Fest, I got to talk to Johnny Russell who I believe runs UltiMachine.  He was a very friendly and knowledgable.  I was impressed to know they know have a full electronics line including solder wave, pick and place and automatic visual inspection.  Their RAMBO controller boards seem to be very popular.  Prusa seemed to like them very much along with many of the RepRappers.

I like how they go into details about the source of their PLA on their website:

    https://ultimachine.com/catalog/print-materials/pla

UltiMachine PLA is made from renewable natural resources like corn. Our filament is made from highest quality NatureWorks Ingeo resins. It is made from corn grown in the United States. The manufacturing is done in the United States. So it is entirely made in the United States. Our filament is designed specifically for RepRap use and is community tested and approved.

BTW, he is on the far left in this RepRap panel from the Fest:

    MRRF: Roundtable And Roundup
