want to get into 3D printing on a budget and curious if there is anything other then the MakiBox that would be good for a beginner or if the MakiBox is ideal for a beginner

I have never used a MakiBox myself, but the folks at hackerspaces in Austin and Houston thought to take advantage of the low-cost printers and tried them. The comments ran from "flimsy" to "came apart when I moved it". I think you should be careful when you try a plexi-glass framed robot that you add additional structural elements if you notice any cracks and don't mind a little wiggle during printing, if you can get into 3D printing for $200 USD. All the challenges can be handled with a little post-production finishing anyway. ThePrinterBot is another inexpensive 3D printer that is available here on Element 14's store as well.
