as far as I know it seems that the better softare to make the conversion easily is the open source Makerbot replicator application. I have not investigated if this can work without any hardware but I suppose yes as well as Cura and Repetier can do. I suggest you to read this article: https://support.makerbot.com/learn/makerbot-desktop-software/using-makerbot-desktop/how-to-prepare-a-model-for-printing_… it is the better explained I have found until now.
