3D printer help - Parts

Hi, I am building a CNC Router at the moment and I inspired my cousin to build a 3D printer.. ive pretty much told him what he will need to build it, quite similar to a CNC Router im pretty sure..

These are the parts I think he will need:

4x Stepper Motors

1x 3 Axis Driver Board

1x 24v Power Supply

1x 200x200 heated bed

1x Extruder

and something to feed the plastic (Thats what the 4th stepper motor is for)

 

Just needed some recommendations on what driver board he should use, and what extruder. The bed is going to be about 200x200mm and I was just wondering what size the stepper motors should be.. We are going to design it so that the bed moves instead of all the uprights for one of the axis so that should scale down the motors a bit, my 1200x750mm Router is only using 287oz steppers and the bed will move for that aswell so i was guessing he might only need like 200oz or like 150oz  motors? Help would be appreciated!

 

Any more info needed? feel free to ask!

    Hello Bailey

    The way it sounds your design would be similar to a Reprap (Cartesian style).  The bed moves in the y while the print head moves in the x and the whole extruder platform moves in the z.  I would check out Reprap.org.  But most 3d printers use a nema 17 motors with around 55 N*cm (78 oz*in) of torque.  The typical cartesion style printer used 5 stepper motors in which the z axis has 2.  Way below what you would need for a CNC machine.  You can always up the motors but will have to change from the standard electronics. Typically my electronics of choice is the Ramps 1.4.  The downside is it doesn't have much room to grow.  While some of the newer boards has extra inputs.  For the hotend my go to is the Lulzbot Budaschnozzle but have also used J-head which is more common, cheaper and still good all around.  I hope this gets you started.
