3D Print Clothing Questions

taj

Hello everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to browse this post. I had a friend approach me today talking about 3D printing clothes from recycled bottles with my art as the design.

She had mentioned that she wanted the clothing to be seamless, so one solid piece. Also my art is not "basic" by any means there are multiple complex layers that require a high quality

print to fully enjoy.

Please excuse me for I have zero depth of knowledge on this subject, but is this a possibility? If so what should we be looking for to further our endeavors?

i.e. Printer specs, How to make bottles into viable printing material, Similar ideas that may suite our needs, or even a 3rd party printer..etc..

I'm going to continue my research in hopes I find my answers, but was told this would be a great place to start!

Thank you for your time and input.

Printing clothing is just at its infancy right now. A great time to be a pioneer in the field. But that won't be easy because there is not a lot of knowledge to learn from.

The materials that exist today are not ideal for clothing, so there is a lot of experimentation and work needed to make them wearable. It needs clever design of small interlocking or woven shapes to allow stiff materials to flex and conform to body shapes.

Multi material printers exist, and they add to the possibilities, but also take even more experimentation to get good results.

The flexible materials that exist, allow for interesting possibilities, but count on doing a lot of experimenting.

At this time the wearable requirements for flexible materials and structures are going to occupy at least as much time as the aspect of creating beautiful designs.

The trick will probably be more about creating functional designs that also look good than trying to find ways to translate some existing design into a print, although I could be wrong.

I think you should start with a low cost printer that has a reliable reputation and see what it can do and figure out what features you need to make better clothing.
