What is the impact of artificial intelligence on society?

Think of compound interest. All of the technological advancements we have today are compound interests of our knowledge and discovery over thousands of years. As time has passed, it has gotten faster to over hundreds of years, and then to over tens of years. Now we are at a time where every two years we advance a little more and every ten years we leap. Any thoughts on this?

  • "Progress" is exponential but humans tend to only try to make linear predictions - because exponential predictions are much harder. (Predicting that a quantum leap will happen every 10 years is and example of a linear prediction). It is easy to predict that AI will shortly be everywhere and used in everything, improving our lives, increasing our lifespan, increasing our abilities, increasing our happiness, etc. However there is a cost which will be things like reduced privacy, reduced freedom, a lot more rules and restrictions. You will need an AI assistant just to remind you of all the rules. AI will allow our planet to support a lot more people, but there will be a cost to that as well - reduced biodiversity, less personal space, etc. Many of the major and even minor issues of the future will be solved with solutions that would be considered unthinkable by people today.  

  • AI is here and will increasingly be integrated into our everyday lives. Nobel Prize Winning Novelist, Kazuo Ishiguro, uses a super-advanced home helper robot in his recent novel, Klara and the Sun -- one cultural example of things percolating in our collective consciousness. The engineering tools available today which were just science fiction fifty years ago, also democratize technology so anyone can add into the AI "primal soup" of our knowledge and culture. But integrating AI into our lives will create a wave of profound change. That's key, I think. Often times, I think, societal leadership hasn't prepared people for change so they have time to digest how it will affect them and what changes they will need to make in their personal and professional lives to adapt to the change. It happened in the Industrial REvolution. It happened with the invention of the transistor and the PC. It happened in the first waves of automation. And it's happened with the Internet REvolution. It will be interesting to see how we prepare and adapt. But we will, humans are an adaptable organism.
