WHICH MICROCONTROLLER DO I CHOOSE?? :/

Former Member over 12 years ago

Hey All,

I'm working on this board which will bridge WIFI to Bluetooth Smart and I've decided pretty much on all the components except the microcontroller image image! I 've been contemplating on this for quite sometime and i could use some help in shortlisting/ finalizing on the microcontroller which could handly both (WIFI and BLE) the stacks and ya..it would help if the microcontroller is as cheap as it can get probably around 5$ or so. Kindly help me out.

The minimum specifications i would like to have on the uC would be:

1. 64 Kb Flash

2. 16 Kb RAM

3. 1Kb EEPROM (optional)

4. USB 2.0  pins (Can probably leave it out if it influences cost a lot)

5. I2C/SPI/UART

6. UltraLowpower

Kinetis K20 (Cortex M4) has a 32k on-chip EEPROM available: NXP Freedom Development Platform for the Kinetis K20 USB MCUs

Kinetis KL26 is very low power (Cortex M0+) and has all the other features you're looking for, probably the more interesting one for you due to lower power: Freedom Development Platform for Kinetis KL16 and KL26 MCUs (up to 128 KB Flash)

Both chips are around $2-$2.50 in large quantities.

I initially though i would go with msp but the main reason that i kinda diverted from that thought was this link..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc8egH4abeo

And moreover the msps' which come with requirements i mentioned are pretty expensive. The kinetis KL26 seems to be a pretty good choice image

but one problem with freescale is that the IC is pretty cheap but the debugger is very expensive

You can use the Freedom boards to program your custom boards using USBDM or CMSIS-DAP (recently Open Sourced): http://mcuoneclipse.com/2013/04/21/using-the-freedom-board-as-jtag-programmer/

P&E Multilink is $119 if you need a more robust solution without totally breaking the bank.

Towards the end of the article it says that it can be used only for programmin but not for debugging. image do you have any other suggestions other than Freescale microcontrollers?

Why not use an ST ARM based micro - lots of cheap dev kits and cheap (STLINK) debugger

Thanks Michael, can you please suggest a part from ST which adheres to the above specs.

I have been looking into the ST M0+ portfolio and none of those were capable enough.

    Thanks
