Hi,

Im new to electronics, but am very intrested to make a few things as a hobby. This comes from watching shows such as The Ben Heck Show and an old Revision3 show Systm. As a recommendation I have bought the book "Understanding Basic Electronics" but I don't know where to go from here, does anyone have any recommendations for projects suited for beginners?

Thanks in advance, Adam.

    Hi,

are You interested in analogue or digital electronic ?

Maybe download some simulation tool (f.e. ADI).

Read tutorials from Maxim, Lenear, TI, Analog etc. There are webseminars or You can find some interesting tutorials on youtube :-)

    Regards,

    P

Hi beginner. I would highly recommend subscribing to everyday practical electronics (epe) mag. You won't regret it!

alakon, get the book titled "make: electronics" and work from there. the book was just released and has lots of good examples supported by theory. highly recommended!

I also like all the "Evil Genius" books that are out there - some really cool projects in those too

    Hi Adam,

If you can only afford one reference by the ARRL Handbook, this is the Amateur Radio league's encyclopedia of everything electronic. I'm a practicing engineer and I still refer to it often for ideas or formulas I can't remember of the top of my head. The basic electronics chapter should be very useful to you.

If you want to start making things then probably spend some change getting an Arduino, or if you want to start with a more powerful platform you can get an  MBED. The Arduino has a more developed community and plenty of libraries which simplify it's use so I'd recommend the Arduino over the MBED if you're just starting out.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Adam,

As others have suggested, have a look at books like Make: Electronics. It is a good guide to getting started and includes a couple of projects to do while you read it. From there you could continue modifying those projects so they become something you want or need. Or, you could have a look at sites such as Instructables, makezine, and any of the hundreds of other sites. They are full of beginner projects to get you going, guides on how to do things, or simply the inspiration you need to think of your own. Can't forget of course Elemen-14 itself. If you have a specific interest, try searching for a relevant group.

    Good luck with finding something!

    Hi Adam,

You can contact radio amateurs in your neighbourhood or a local department of RSGB.

    See http://www.rsgb.org/committees/regional/

There you will find people interested in radio and electronics who are willing to help you.

They also give training’s for the amateur radio licence. Even if you don’t want to become a radio amateur this will help you to know more about electronics.

Publications from amateur radio clubs like RSGB and ARRL are also very helpful.

    Adam,

It is always best to start simple and understand what you are doing so that you build on a good foundation. Also, where you start will be determined by where you want to go. Are you interested in digital, analog, RF, microcontrollers, etc? The best thing to do is to find something you would like to learn how to do, break it up into simple modules, and then assemble them into the final project. Many people start with understanding power supplies, since every project needs one. Others start by looking at basic test equipment and use that experience in measurement as a launching point. either way these basics will serve you well. Many of the issues you find in the electronics world revolve around power and measurement. I hope that helps.

    Richard

Welcome to Element14. Your first post!

The "hello world" of electronics always comes down to blinking an LED. Start there. From there, try to control the frequency and brightness. Then start adding more.

If you like doing that, take it to a more extreme level. Like here: http://www.element-14.com/community/groups/arduino/blog/2011/03/22/led-cube-control-design-and-software
