There's a mob here that uses accelerometers and cameras mounted to our bus fleet to scan the roads on a nearly continuous basis:

That's a smart approach. They measure glitches in bus acceleration, that are typical for road hurdles. That should be a way cleaner signal to analyse than vibrations.

I didn't quite specifiy enough when I said:

(such projects require several skilled PHD+ level engineers with adequate resources in terms of computing and software tools).

Having access to a fleet of large vehicles repeatedly traversing the same route must help as well !
