MATLAB licensing advice for SDR/general hobby?

JWx
JWx 11 months ago

Hello!

As a follow-up to the SDR Pluto Roadtest forum thread I have a question to the MATLAB experts: considering home licensing model, what add-ons are required/nice to have for - for example - SDR related, entry level experiments?

It seems that at least:

  • Communications Toolbox
  • DSP System Toolbox
  • Signal Processing Toolbox

are needed in addition to the main license...

shabaz , you own MATLAB. What modules do you think are essential?

It looks like your interests are similar to mine. The toolboxes I've got installed are listed below (not all will be relevant for your needs, but I've listed them all).

I don't know if the home license rules are identical in your region compared to mine, but if they are, then there's an important point:

After a year or more, if you wish to add more toolboxes, then you'll need to pay the maintenance fee (which is proportional to what you've paid for the base software (e.g. release R2025 or whatever) , plus toolboxes). Personally I don't wish to pay maintenance yearly, and would rather just pay every few years if I really need to.

If you've got a lot of toolboxes, then it could seem to be cheaper to just re-purchase the base software, plus the one or two toolboxes you need, but then you've got the big problem that you've got some toolboxes running on the older release, and some on the newer, so this can be quite useless.

The only semi-practical solution (if you don't want to pay maintenance yearly), is to purchase all the toolboxes you think you will need to cover you for the next few years, within the year. Otherwise, if you think you'll just add a few toolboxes per year, you'll be paying quite a large maintenance fee in the later years, unless you decide to get rid of some toolboxes.

I've got 13 toolboxes, and on average, only pay maintenance every few years, i.e., I try to avoid getting new toolboxes as much as possible, but sometimes that's not practical. I can't recall why I needed some of these toolboxes, but often there can be some small function you need, and it's only present in a particular toolbox.

13 toolboxes is becoming quite a large expense for home users, so probably then next time I renew maintenance, I will get rid of some of them. I wish Matlab had a difference maintenance fee model for home users.

Thank you for help! It seems to be not very easy problem to solve - one would want to be at university still to be eligible for perpetual student license (as it comes bundled with 10 toolboxes)...

BTW. Does anybody knows which question type needs to be selected in the portal to get "like" counters for answers, not only ranking tool? I have selected "discussion" but it still has only ranking buttons...

btw - there is something strange with the portal:

    text above the question states:

Be sure to click 'more' and select 'suggest as answer'!

If you're the thread creator, be sure to click 'more' then 'Verify as Answer'!

but the only thing I see when clicking "more" is "report as spam/abusive"...

I see the same here. I've never seen an option to 'suggest as answer', even though others have somehow managed it in other posts.

I would say that it is tied to how the forum post is created.  You get two choices:  Question or Discussion.  Questions allow answers.  Discussions probably don't.

Indeed but I don't see the option even on pages that others have managed to 'suggest as answer'.
Presumably the 'See a helpful answer?' banner only appears if the post is submitted as a question ?
