We've come a long way in our love affair with FPGAs. What do you think?

i love my fpgasI've been working in the element14 community since 2016. I can remember back then, the Raspberry Pi seemed to be the element14 community's first love. Of course, Arduino tried breaking us in two, to quote an old Joe Jackson song. But it didn't work. Then a few years later we got serious about our relationship with FPGAs. And the community hasn't stopped loving it.

But our love affair with FPGAs has changed, as all relationships are bound to do. Years ago, we were just trying to get to know each other. But our relationship began warming up with a few webinars, which led us to our Path to Programmable 1 and 2.

We then sweetened our love affair with FPGAs with AI and machine learning from Project14. And after all these years we are finding new ways to get to know one another.

Perhaps you can tell me how well our love affair with FPGAs is going by voting in the polls below. Thanks!

Randall

Fun survey. Number 5 dealt with the qualities you consider when choosing an FPGA. I like number of LEs optimized for price. I didn't see this option reflected so I had to choose other. I am always on the…

I think it depends. On FIT CTU in Prague there is very high effort on FPGA. It is much bigger than for example on MCUs or other embedded technologies but FPGA technology is very complex and even after several courses of FPGAs, Verilog and VHDL I have heard some things on wbinars for a first time.

Great survey.  I did not know that, so I missed my right to vote. No.15 gave us some clue why so many software engineer working for FPGA now. I hope hardware engineers can do more work on FPGA platforms in the next wave of  development trend.

flyingbean I don't understand your "right to vote" comment.  However, if you wanted to vote but could not, it's usually that you are logged out.  I run into the same thing from time to time with wanting to comment.  "Why can't I... oh, yeah."

Looks like "right to vote" is a strong term here. I did not visit or read every information/blog in the community. I got this thread from the email sent to my mailbox this afternoon. Then I thought it should be better to join the conversation. If I could, I would join the survey.  It is not the issue from the community. I am the one did not participate every event here. Anyway, I am trying to do my best to support this community.

Are saying that you are logged into element14 and clicking on the "vote" links do not provide access to the voting options? Or you just don't think you should vote? You can certainly vote and actually are encouraged to vote.

You don't have to participate in "every event" or any events to vote. Log into the community and go to this page and click the Vote link.

I find FPGAs interesting, but beyond my current capabilities to use.

I try to follow all of the projects and blogs, most of which confirm that they are not something I can do any more.

When you have a good requirements fit, a FPGA can be very useful, but I do worry that some people are trying to force fit them into projects better done with other hardware/software solutions.

Having done DSP work, I can see where an PFGA solution would fit in the relms of various real time projects.

I still have to review things from the blog, when I recover from the flu.

That's the idea, but I find difficulties trying to do "something" with an FPGA, like a hobby project, it's harder to start and I ended using an MCU. I'm going to attend more workshops when they become available.
