benefits of mesh and Peer-Peer networks for IoT?

I guess these networks extend the range of low power wireless networks.  Are there any other advantages?

 

A peer-peer network could work without a gateway.  For home automation, is that a big advantage?

    It's a good question! Low power wireless range is very good for home use these days, but there will still be uses for a mesh - for example there may be hundreds of connected devices in the home that are very resource-constrained where you can't afford to transmit at a high power.
