What's the dumbest thing you could sense and connect to the internet?

cstanton

At first, I thought "how about the internet of showers?" then realised monitoring of water consumption, moisture, bacteria levels, and general use was probably sensible.

Then I thought "what about shovels?" then I figured this is more like it, there's probably not a lot you could gain from connecting a capacitive sensor to a shovel, or detect soil humidity and acidity while you dig, or know you're digging into a pipe if you keep going, well, maybe I'm starting to actually convince myself it is sensible here.

This isn't working.

Someone convince me, what's the dumbest thing you could sense and connect to the internet? There's got to be something superfluous.

You could sense the IQ of a politician.

Hehe is it cheating to suggest something with as little information as possible : ) Like an 'Is the Pope Catholic?' sensor : ) Someone who periodically asks him, and clicks the yes or no button connected to the Internet : )

Otherwise, I'd like to see kids pre-school alphabet toys connected to the Internet, to see if they could eventually come up with the works of Shakespeare or something else profound at random : )

Hmmm this is going to take some thought, so many things are already connected  and trying to keep politics and world leaders out of this so lets think of something silly like the temperature of my left big toe ( or right if you prefer or both!! ). Well who cares ???  Ah but then I thought that as I am diabetic it could be an indicator of circulatory problems which could be automatically notify my doctor. This would mean I wouldn't need the regular checkups I have now so save some NHS money.

Ok back to the thinking board....

Oh gee. It seems like anything you can sense and connect to the Internet can have some sort of scientific purpose!

Like even a fart sensor can be useful for science! (and then we'll have to admit that it's not the cows after all )

Or is it that our engineering minds are so trained that our subconscious automatically blocks dumb ideas from even coming to the surface?

If it's just sensing then probably something that compromises your security, like a keylogger attached to your computer.

Ok I asked one of my non scientific daughters, she came up with - A counter which shows how many times you have said the word "the"

This could also apply to other words as well but not too many as you could lead into studying language constructs / regional variations etc.
