Don't leave Lithium Ion batteries charging overnight...

This was a surprise!

Going away for a bit, and charged up my camera batteries, only to see this; you can see the left battery has a curved surface, it's not flat like the one on the right.

I measured the thickness at 20.4 mm, compared to 18.5 mm for the one on the right.

The one on the left was purchased in July of this year, but never used until today. Today was the first time I charged it, in a genuine Sony charger.

The one on the left is by Ansmann, and was a lot cheaper than the one on the right (Sony).

Ansmann is usually a decent brand, so I was very surprised this occurred. I'm glad I noticed this now and didn't forget to leave it in the charger overnight or longer!

Definitely purchased from Amazon as the seller, from the Ansmann Store there; with supposedly a 5-year warranty, but it didn't last a day:

The other side is flat:

Anyway, it's a reminder, don't forget to remove batteries from chargers overnight and if possible always be around to check on them just in case.

We use a small ammo box at work for small batteries whilst they are awaiting disposal as part of the WEEE process cycle which involves a van trip to the shipping containers.

We've got lots of spare batteries which currently are in kept in plastic storage bins for easy access, which was why I was pondering aramid fibre bags.

Some of the smaller tool safes might be about the right size for you but probably not the cheapest.

I have a few "suspect" ones that I bought because a customer insisted on using them. I keep them outside.

At home we keep the bicycle batteries in the shed.

What i really want is a very small container (constructed like a shipping container but maybe 2 - 4 cubic feet capacity.)

Ammo boxes would be good but I cant' find decent sized cheap ones.

You may have an issue with that 5-year warranty from Ansmann, as I think it is only valid throughout the EU.

Although if it was shipped from a EU based Amazon warehouse, you may be ok
(Usually the problem is the other way around - shipped from a EU warehouse and manufacturer treating it as a grey import)

Does anyone charge / store their batteries in a steel box or aramid fibre bag to buy some time should they decide to fail in a bad way ?

Yes, you have to be careful with knockoff components.

You may think you are getting a deal by going cheap, but then this happens and you realize that maybe getting the approved component is indeed worth it.

I've had poor luck buying replacement batteries for my Panasonic camera. The replacements have slightly better specs than the original, but actual performance is dramatically worse. No bulging, just no capacity.
