Solar Battery Charger

tallen121
tallen121 over 7 years ago

I would like to preface this post by saying I have no idea what I'm doing.

So here's what I have going on.

I bought a bunch of solar garden lights at my dollar store. Each light comes with a solar panel and a rechargeable AAA battery.

I've connected all of the batteries up in series, and I've connected up the solar panels in some horrible series/parallel hybrid.

My goal with this is to hook up the batteries to the solar panels, and connect all of that to the interior of a car USB charger to use it to make a solar panel phone charger.

However, I'm not very familiar or comfortable with electricity. So how would I go about connecting the solar panels to the batteries, and eventually to the usb power? Any help is very much appreciated.image

Hi Tallen, Thanks for the heads up on your skill base. Hooking the batteries directly to the solar cells is very bad! Depending upon the battery you use, each is sensitive to the rate at which they charge…

From the description, this circuit is set up to do a controlled charge of a very specific battery.  The design is simple and selected for just a single type of battery.

It is not intended as a general purpose battery charger.

But the batteries I have are the ones that came with the circuit.

That may be, but it still does not make it a good design.

Clearly nobody bothered to run a safety check on the product before they allowed it to be imported.

It is an accident waiting to happen.

I buy it. Ok so let's ignore the hazard batteries. What can I do to at least get those solar panels to charge my phone?

Yes, but as I said earlier, you need to get a charger circuit that can charge the batteries safely.

Do some web searches on your battery type and you will find a lot of places that have the charge circuit and then you will know how many solar cells you need to use and in what configuration to support the charger.

So. I've just decided to ignore the batteries for now and just start to get my phone to charge via solar panels. Luckily I figured out how that little usb car charger works and I wired it up to the batteries. The batteries charge my phone but for some reason when I connect it to the solar panels, nothing works. I even rewired them all in series like the batteries but still not even the LED lights up. I'm not sure why.image

So the LED lights up a bit when I put the panels in direct sunlight. So I'm thinking if I double the amount of panels I have, it should work.

I suppose I've done it. So for recap:
    1. I've wired the solar panels in series into a car charger circuit.
    2. I've plugged the car charger into a battery bank.

Now it works and the battery bank should disconnect the battery when it's fully charged.
The only issues currently are the fact that the solar panels are not providing enough charge to actually power the battery in a reasonable amount of time. I will update my design by doubling the amount of solar panels or at least keep adding them until I can actually charge the battery in less than 3 years.
