hi,

i am designing a remote monitoring system for a small solar water heater. in this set up the water vapor is condensed and is collected in a container.I need to find a suitable sensor for measuring the collected liquid level. The amount of liquid collected is very minimal and the container is open at the top.If anybody have a suggestion please reply immediately.

Hi Aiswaryaa, Have you checked out Spark Fun? They have a liquid height sensor. https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10221 John

Any capacitance measurement circuit can be used to measure water depth as accurately as as your capacitance meter. The capacitor "plates" to be measured are simply vertical wires running up the length…

It would work fine even with pretty large spacing and it doesn't matter if the container is conductive, although with a conductive container it would work better if the sense (insulated) wire is at least…

Another idea is to mass the container.  You can get a weigh scale from ebay with RS-232 output for pretty cheap.  If you like to get down to the nitty-gritty, you can get a load-cell from there and condition its signal using open-source technology from Analog Devices.
