U1461A used to measure MOV clamp voltage

Hi All,

As part of the Element14 Road-test I have done a series of tests to create a review. Although I have completed the primary tests I found another use for the U1461A in measuring MOV's

Created a quick video blogging what I did to measure. Really handy bit of kit.

    Hi Malcolm,

Yes thankfully I had no problems.

Hi John, I don't think you need to worry about the meter, the main problem with measuring the high voltage is the current and the potential for arcing (CAT definition). With sufficient current limit you quite likely can go over the rated voltage without damage,One of the tests I had done was to use the Insulation Resistance to measure the input impedance of other multimeter's. Very accurate results and I easily pushed it to 1039V.

    Hi Peter,

The only fear I had was how I would feel if I fried one of my meters. They are rated at 1k V but it made me nervous asking them to operate that close to specs. Thanks for your reply.

Glad it worked out John, I had looked at some application notes, which I subsequently lost the link, I think it was from Analog Devices that incorporated loads of resistor and a 600V source. I didn't look at the manual either other than looking at the set-up and operations.

I was amazed looking at Marks post that the copy of the description talked about MOV's and other transient devices.I just spur of the moment saw and application mostly for the power supply I was testing. The strange thing is originally I wasn't targeting to look at the MOV specifically, I actually stumbled across its application trying to work out why the transistor blew. I bought the Plotter second hand and it was working well till I turned it once and heard a significantly loud bang that really scared the living be-jesus out of me. I couldn't even see the damaged when I opened it up either.

Any was a really fun exercise and it really re-affirmed how well the meter performed for such a wide variety of things.
