U1461A used to measure MOV clamp voltage

Hi All,

As part of the Element14 Road-test I have done a series of tests to create a review. Although I have completed the primary tests I found another use for the U1461A in measuring MOV's

Created a quick video blogging what I did to measure. Really handy bit of kit.

    Hi Mark,

My reviews usually do not involve looking at other reviews. Just my way. Great minds think alike, image

There are so many features that I could not explore, we are currently moving now so everything is in complete disarray at the moment. I hope to complete the full review soon.

    Cheers

    Hi Mark,

Welcome back. I hope you had a nice holiday.

I have a small pile of MOVs that I have not been able to categorize or use as their numbers seldom cross. Malcolm's blog inspired me to set up a test jig to test them, since the cost of that beautiful meter is a tad out of my price range. I will not describe the circuit that I used as you would not approve it for publication but it involved (3) meters, (1) variac, (1) 100k 5W resistor, (1) 9 kV neon sign transformer, and (4) high voltage diodes. Thanks to Malcolm all my MOVs have clamping voltage ratings written on them now.

    Well done.

You can also set the 'trip' current for values of 0.1mA to 1.5mA along with the step size, so it has a very broad range to cater for many types.

At work they are buying one for the ease of testing the MOV's used in Line Protection units I mentioned here.

Thanks Peter, I have to say, although I am still trying to complete my Review the meter is absolutely fantastic. Kind of thing I would have loved to have years ago.
