Inexpensive Soldering Iron?

keno
keno over 6 years ago

Hi,

As a poor student am looking for an inexpensive soldering iron for small infrequent projects.

Have done some searching and the least expensive I have found is Harbor Freight 30 Watt Lightweight Soldering Iron ($3.99 Compare to $9.99, Ironton 43985).  https://www.harborfreight.com/30-watt-lightweight-soldering-iron-69060.html

Appreciate any comments and other recommendations.

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken, I doubt anyone here will recommend a cheap soldering irons without temperature control for electronics. Better to spend a bit more if you can. Look for on that has adjustable temperature and changeable…

Frank is right, temperature control is important as soon as you can afford it. However I used a cheap uncontrolled iron for several decades before I could afford a temperature controlled iron. To use a…

Hi I am personally using Pulse 936 Gold Soldering kit for past year which can be found from china for as cheep as 1200/- (Approx <15$) It can be found under many names but all are same. Personally I found it to be the cheapest and most useful Highly recommend it due to the following reasons:-

    1.     Soldering Iron is detachable and is a ripoff of HAKO 936.

    2.     Soldering tips used are also HAKO 936 compliant i.e. easy repairs and videly available replacements.

It is a good bargain if you get these for about 12-15$ image

    Happy Soldering. image

    Regards,

    GS Gill

    Hi GS Gill,

Thanks for the  "Pulse 936 Gold Soldering kit"  Googled using "..." but got nothing removing "..." got nothing relevant.   Do you have a website for it?

"Highly recommend it due to the following reasons:1.Soldering Iron is detachable and is a ripoff of HAKO 936. 2. Soldering tips used are also HAKO 936 compliant i.e. easy repairs and videly available replacements."  Agree!

"It is a good bargain if you get these for about 12-15$"  Also agree!!!

Beginners questions:  Have you had to repair or replace anything?  Also how is the tip wear?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi Ken,

I had purchased it from eBay India, unfortunatily the sight has been taken down so cant share the link but search for generic 936 soldering station. (Preferably on Aliexpressfirst  for getting the name of the manufactures and then on your local web stores image )

here is what it looks like,

    image

ohh it does come with the stand and sponge image

as far as tips are concerned, it came with only one fine tip,

    image

And as I cant rely on fine tip I got a set of approx 10 tips from Aliexpress for about 2$ something similar to this

finally, I have been using the below tip for about 3-4 months regularly and hears the condition image

       imageimage

And it still works absolutely fine.

Getting max out of your Good quality soldering tip is up to how well you keep it, I like to clean it and apply solder to the tip to avoid corrosion to the tip before switching it off, hope this helps.

    Regards,

    GS Gill

    GS Gill,

Have you taken the cover off your Pulse 936 Gold Soldering kit?  If yes did you make photos of the inside?

Beginners question:  How did you post photos?  looked for add photo button but have not found it.

Thanks again for your detailed comments and photos!

    Douglas Wong,

    Thanks for the info!!!

Was wondering how to find out what the other icons mean.  Decided to hold the mouse arrow over each and this info was shown.  Most are self explanatory.

Question on last right one (>>).   When use mouse arrow just says Insert.  How do I use it?

Seems I could use a guide/tutorial.  Is anything like this available?  Especially a video.
