Power supply alternative for FY6900 signal generator

cdpar2000
cdpar2000 over 4 years ago

I am purchasing a FeelTech FY6900 60MHz signal generator.  Reading the reviews, its power supply seems to be its weak point.  I would like to replace it with a Mean Well 65W Triple Output Switching Power Supply.  It has the required +12V, -12V, +5V outputs.  However since this is a switching power supply I am wondering if it will generate noise that might interfere with the quality of the waveforms.  The specs for the Mean Well RT-65B state +5 out noise/ripple of 80mVp-p, +12 out 120mVp-p, and -12 out 80mVp-p.  I am a novice and don't know if that much noise/ripple is significant and might interfere with the quality of the wave forms.

For $20. I am assuming this could be a good upgrade.  Thoughts?

thank you,
Chuck P.Rocklin, CA

This is indeed quite strange, because without the +/- 12V, the generator cannot output its specified voltage (which is, IIRC, +-10V sine wave). If it does output this voltage, then there would need to…

I hate to say it but with the FY6900 you are rather getting what you paid for - not much Probably not worth spending much more time or money on it - but you could check the frequency of the oscillator…

At the risk of pointing you away from this great site, this is something that is discussed in great detail on the eevblog forum. Just do a search - people who have bought this unit have modified it to…

The very cheap power supply is only one of the problems. I would like to see some smart guy offering a kit with a linear power supply designed for the FTY6900 including an adjustable TCXO for the reference oscillator. My FY6900 is around 220Hz out of beat on 10MHz. This out of instrument specification but don't expect any support from FeelTech. I sent them many e-mails but no answer at all. There is not any way to exercise guarantee, any tech support like service manual or at least a basic schematic. Nothing. On the other hand this is a very flexible instrument. Many functions and easy to use. FeelTech should fix the power supply issue. If you have to add some U$40 on your FY you may find better options. The final result is that I am using my 40+ years old HP 3325A, much much bigger, heavier and less flexible but with the precision and dependability I need.

Actually I designed one 10MHz reference input which takes a GPS reference, and the output if it is set for 60kHz synchronous with the WWVB 60kHz, the new internal oscillator although not ovenized it could keep the frequency relative well after disconnecting the GPS since I made a provision for frequency fine adjustment for it.

Power supply, yes the original is not very good and very noisy, because of that and also increase the weight of the unit I am using a linear power supply, which -- for the +5V has one SCR pre-regulator to reduce the dissipation on the linear +5V regulator,

There is no noise existent any more.

That way I could use available inexpensive transformers with 24V center tap, 12W with medical grade separation between primary and secondary winding.

I case of substantial interest I would make a kit or even drop in replacement.
