Mystery Part  What is it?

While salvaging a board marked as an Auto Focus Servo I came across this component the likes of which I have never seen before. It is marked with the following numbers: 16 0M 9330SMI. It is identified as Y1 on the print layer of the board. It has 2 visible contacts along the edges. I have not removed it yet to see if there are more underneath. The front of the component is clear glass. Inside the window I can see what looks like a golden mirror with two legs that come down and make contacts. This is for my curiosity so it isn't very important but if anyone knows what it is let me know. Photos are attached.

Hi Shabaz, Thanks for the insight into this part. You are right it is a little bit older, I would guess 10 years at least and from the construction of the board and the other components used perhaps a…

I'd never seen a crystal package like that before.  I did a little research and I think it's a "ceramic surface-mount crystal with glass lid", which you can google for vendors and images.

I don't know what the advantage of such a package would be.  From the age of the equipment, one theory could be that very few crystals at the time could withstand the heat of reflow soldering.  IIRC, it used to be that most crystals needed to be added as through-hole devices, usually hand-soldered.  OTOH, they had to solder the connector anyway, so might as well use a through-hole crystal.  Maybe the ceramic package has better stability.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the good information. I will google the Ceramic Surface Mount Crystal as you recommend.
