Any one have any experience with the Multicomp PRO MP710258 DC Electronic Load?

I am in the market for a programmable DC load and I have been looking at MP710258 US  DC Electronic Load, Multicomp PRO Electronic Loads, 150 W, Programmable, 0 V, 120 V, 30 A device Multicomp Pro MP10258Multicomp Pro MP10258.  Does anyone have any experience with this device?

I have recently added a Multicomp Pro, MP730027 DMM Multicomp Pro MP730027 DMMMulticomp Pro MP730027 DMM to my bench and I have been supper happy with the price/performance of this device, so I am really curious about some of their other instruments.

Thanks, I had no idea about your library. I'm just here for discussion of electronic loads. Multicomp PRO MP710258 DC Electronic Load Operator's Manual

    Hi Gene,

I looked into the sister model a while back and the issue was no documentation for SCPI which was a deal breaker for me.  I don’t know if that has changed. The thread is here:  https://www.element14.com/community/message/298715/l/kel103-scpi-programmers-manual#298715

The multicomp DC loads are very similar to other products on the market (like the Kel103).  I did find some communication protocols manuals from a similar model (very likely the same protocol).  Here is a link to the site with the manuals.

    https://www.distrelec.biz/en/electronic-dc-load-120v-30a-300w-rnd-lab-rnd-320-kel103/p/30126024

There is a download for "Communication Commands with Computer.pdf" which looks like what you may have been looking for.

That is a good find!  The reason I have been reluctant is that I have had mixed luck with Multicomp instruments and SCPI.  A power supply I bought didn't have the SCPI documentation on the Newark site but I was able to figure the commands out by trying various common commands for power supplies.  Gough Lui subsequently found a rebranded supply like mine which confirmed the commands I had sussed out.  Then I purchased my Multicomp LCR meter and found that not all the commands in the manual work and some that do are intermittent and not reliable.  I've not had any problems with the other instruments.

However, that DC load is priced very well, and should you find it works well I'd be interested to hear as I am still in the market for one.

Not sure how close of a relative it is to a Korad product rebadged - but I was trying to help out someone with a Tenma rebadge and that one was a bit of a head-scratcher using UDP ...

Thanks everyone for the comments.  Once I started looking at some of the other clones of this design, including some really bad reviews (lots of DOAs), I decided against trying out this product.  Instead, I found a used B&K 8500 on eBay that I was able to get on a best offer at a pretty good price (with a good return policy and ebay's buyer support).  I will let you know what I think about the purchase once I get some experience with the new device.

I'll be very interested to know what you think about that one. I have the super-basic B&K, which I think is meant for production test. It's fine and I'm glad I got it at a used price.

But I would really like an electronic load with more features and I've looked at the 8500 a few times.

    Thank James,

I will be sure to let you know how it works out.

I have been using an older, analog Electronic load (Kikusui PLZ 72W) for a few years now.  It does allow me to test my load protection circuits, but I really wanted the ability to program load sequences, so I could test these features as a part of my QC tests.  Today I was testing a new design, applying various loads and seeing if the load and time delays were functioning properly (manually switching between two load levels). (values captured through USB link to the device under test).

It looks like the BK 8500 could do all of this, plus capture the voltage and current levels.  (I hope)

I cleaned-up the operator's manual for easy reading. It is unfortunately huge. Let's see if I can share via Dropbox
