MDO4014-3 Spectrum Analyzer Scope-Porn Noise

Tektronix let me borrow one of their mixed-mode scopes that has a spectrum analyzer and a full-featured scope in the same box. It's cool because you can watch one domain and trigger of the other.  You can watch them at the same time and stop them both to look at the frequency domain during a time-domain event.  Very cool.

I'm getting this weird noise on the spectrum analzyer side.  It is a set of two large symmetric peaks centered around 2.5GHz.

The signal presists even when I terminate the input with a 50 ohm dummy load.  I have another spectrum analyzer and have confirmed there's no noise in the area.

I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong because this is a new scope.

I have seen this too,(bolth mdo4104-6 and mdo4014-3) all though not as bad. the sample clock of 2.5Ghz presents a small ~10dB average peak

    have you compensated signal path?

if not, after compensating signal path, is it still there?

What do you mean by compensating for the signal path?  I thought the SA just shows you the magnitude of power present at the input port.  I termiated it with a 50 ohm load and expected to see just the noise floor.  Instead the peaks persist.

remove RF input, and run compensation. also try pushing "default setup" to remove any other settings

I had tried reset-to-defaults.  Running Compensation fixed the problem. image   Thanks!!

I left it in the car in the garage last night.  It was about 0F outside last night, so maybe the cold affected it.  It's non-operating range is down to -80F, so it shouldn't have damaged it.  But maybe it caused it to need to be compensated.  Thanks again.

Your welcome, I often run the compensation as my "lab" is not temperature controlled and as noisy as could be.

The noise floor should be better than -60dBm @ 0dBm ref, also fairly close to linear.
