Hopefully you've seen the past Electronics Inside episode where Clem and I tore down a 1930s accounting machine. So of course I had to have a go at fixing it again! I hope this doesn't end the same way as my last attempt. I take a look at its very unusual switch type device that controls the motor, test it thoroughly before putting power to it, and much more

This one only runs when the mechanism closes. It would be frightfully noisy to have that running full time. Although, some dot matrix printers would probably have it beat still!

Does the motor only run when the mechanism closes the contacts or does it run continuously from power on ?

I've seen office equipment from this sort of era that uses an electromechanical clutch mechanism to engage/disengage the drive mechanism from a continuously running motor.
