Enclosure IP rating confusion

JWx
JWx over 2 years ago

Hello!

after briefly studying enclosure datasheet I have found something strange: it is described as IP68 (NEMA 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12, 13), but PDF provided

www.farnell.com/.../2239464.pdf

states only: NEMA 4, 4X

in addition, family description from manufacturer's site:

https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/small-case/plastic/1554

states that this family is "NEMA Type 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 & 13", "Except 1554/55 V size which is 4,4X only"

as there are a few part numbers with V inside (VGY, VALGY, VAGY, VBGY) I wonder if our enclosure (1554VA2GYCL) can be considered IP68 or NEMA4X (so no submersion allowed)?

I had a little chat with a Hammond Technical Product Specialist. She confirmed that our enclosure meets IP68.

I saw that also.  I had planned on a submersion test, but submersion is not required for my application.  I would expect that since most of the enclosures have an IP68 rating, that it should meet the temporary (30 min) submersion requirement.  Not sure how to interpret the spec - does the NEMA 4 indicate that it failed NEMA 6 or that it wasn't tested?  It would be nice if they provided the IP rating for this specific enclosure if it is different.

The Amphenol connectors are also only rated to IP67 and at least one (4p circular) is only rated when mated.  I think the challenge will be using the connectors when submerged.

When clicking specific parts on manufacturer's portal our enclosure P/N is reported as IP68, but - for example - 1554V2GYCL (the same size but with 4 screws, not 6 as in our model) is only IP66.

Maybe cover of this size when secured only with 4 screws is failing NEMA6? I think lack of NEMA6 is because of test failure - in my opinion manufacturer would test the whole family (it adds value after all) and exclude only models that have failed specific tests...

I think the statement that V size is only rated for Nema 4 (IP65) applies to this enclosure. I will be using it in an immersion application anyway and hopefully  taking enough precautions to ensure the project works. (a minor leak won't cause failure) It should be interesting to see how well it performs.

That's good to know!  I suspected that it can be related to the screw count...

Did you recommend that they amend the product description for the V size enclosures?  I missed that there were 4 and 6 screw versions (V vs VA/B).

Maybe put an asterisk on the NEMA 4 units.

I think they need to improve the way that the information is showed or maybe a better part number definition.

I did my own analysis, and I don't think that V means 4 screws and VA 6 screws. Also, you can have IP68 in a 4 screws version, the quantity of screws is determined by the size of the enclosure.

My understanding is that the ABS lid is IP66, and the polycarbonate lid is IP68.

    Hello!

I think it is unnecessary complicated (too many versions under one P/N) - ABS version is also for indoor use only...

    https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/small-case/plastic/1554

    • ABS Versions are molded from general purpose material which carries a flammability rating of UL94-HB.  For indoor use.
    • Polycarbonate versions are UV stabilized for outdoor use.  Gray polycarb carries a UL94-5VA rating, while clear and smoked lids carry a UL94V-0 rating.
    • [...]
    • Polycarb versions are designed to meet NEMA Type 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 & 13 ratings which meet and exceed IP ratings up to and including IP68.  (Except 1554/55 V size which is 4,4X only)
    • ABS Plastic versions are designed to meet IP66.

How did you contact this Product Specialist?  It would be a good resource for the rest of us.  I posted a question of the E14 Amphenol Product Forum, but it doesn't seem like it's been active recently.

    Thanks,

    Ralph
