Hello,
My name is Justin BERGER and I am currently working on an automatic bar project.
This is a device for making cocktails with pumps sending different drinks into a glass.
I have been thinking about this project for several months. This contest will give me a deadline and give a boost for the realization of this automatic bar. But will also allow me to exchange with people interested on this project.
1. The advantages of the project
More and more people drink cocktails, so to have a machine able to make them automatically seems a very good idea.
- Do you want to be able to make one of many cocktails with just one click?
- Do you want to be able make your favourite cocktails over and over again?
- Do you want to have your cocktail served cold?Do you want to be able to pour your cocktail at a distance by smartphone or web and have it ready when you arrive home or from the bath?
My goal is to build a project that packs all this into one machine.
2. The initial tests
For the moment I have written a program for sending liquids in the proportions we want and I have installed the pumps to conduct pilot tests which have proven conclusive. I will make a cabinet to install it in and to present it all beautifully. To do this I have access to a joinery workshop.I plan to improve the project by installing a cooling system so as to serve the drinks cold. To do this I will use Peltier modules. I have started testing on this. It represents a significant amount of work.
3. Project timeline :
- Study
- Design and modelling in 3D
- Studying the different possibilities for pouring a cocktail
- Researching a cooling system - the objective is to have a system that is easy to use, similar to a beer tap.
- Production
- The building of the pump system
- Programming the raspberry
- Installing the components
- Wiring
- Pilot testing
- Building the cooling system
- Studying the best system allowing cooling of the drink whilst respecting food and electrical norms and avoiding getting too cluttered
- The goal is to design a system that is easy to start up
- Pilot testing
- Installing the various components of the cocktail maker into the cabinet
- Electrical power source. The Peltier modules require a DC power supply.
- Building into the cabinet. The objective is to have beautiful object which is easy to use and, if possible, transportable

I believe this project fits well into the "Pi Chef Design Challenge Cook, Bake & Brew with Raspberry Pi"”competition as it allows us to develop a system to make a multitude of cocktails relatively easily. It is also an object which is attractive as allows people to make cocktails easily using a straightforward program.
4. 2 important points
- Innovation : I have not yet seen a cocktail machine which cools your drink. The cooling system is therefore an innovation.
- Engineering: there is an important technical aspect as this involves a good electrical power source and an effective hydraulic circulation and heat exchange system
5. Received Element14 parcel
I was delighted to receive the element14 parcel. It’s a huge boost towards the completion of this project. I’m sure i’ll make really good use of many of these. I plan to use and test the :
Explore NFC Expansion board
Sense Hat
2.4" Touch Screen Hat
Raspberry Pi3
Conclusion
I constantly set myself challenges, but must admit that this is the first time that I have embarked upon such an adventure. I am very invested in this project and it interests me alot.
This drinks and fresh cocktail distribution system is a real challenge. I will probably face difficulties, but I will set up work processes that will solve these one after another. I have already started testing/tasting cocktails and ordering the equipment to test for cooling. This will allow me to expand my skills.
I will have to study many possibilities and make several tests for the "cooling" system because it requires transversal knowledge in several domains (electronics, refrigeration, hydraulics ...).
Furthermore once the cooling system works well, integrating an android app with voice control will add significant innovation to the project.
Taking part in this competition gives a huge boost to this project and means a lot to me.
