A Floral Bokeh

image

Here is a picture of the Ring with white selected.

The following are self portraits done using the Light Ring without the flash enabled and with the camera hand held.

With the first attempt you can see the reflection from the Light Ring.

With the second and third attempts I have bokeh. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

Deliberate and artistic bluring (Well not really.)

I now need to invest in a decent Macro Lens or adapter and make a diffuser for the Light Ring for better close ups.

You have the option of raw for the canon T1 (which I presume is close to yours), so I would use that.

It will allow minor corrections to everything except focus, before exporting to a jpeg.

Adding filters is a very cheap way to get results, nut anything you add removes or reduces the lens sharpness, etc.

Proper extension tubes or proper lens reverse rings don't reduce the lens performance, but as you found need to be for that combination.

I haven't tried my reverse adapter on the 3100/3200, but I did on earlier film camera with fantastic results.

I don't bother with the camera flash for anything macro. I either use natural light (with long exposure if necessary) or a remote flash.

You can buy flashes very cheap (or do what Monte has done with leds) that you can use external to the camera.

He has some other practical advice http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm

His best entry is this one titled Why Your Wife Wants You to Get an Expensive New Camera http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/wife.htm image

Ken also has a very good piece on Bayer Interpolation, which explains why most digital images (in raw form) don't look sharp.

    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bayer.htm

I always end up using 1 or 2 sharpness on my images, and it makes a difference.

A very large telescope is on my list, but it keeps getting shoved further down ....

    Hi Mark,

Change the F number for a lens is a good way to do some really cool photography.

I use it for my telescope to get some amazing levels of magnification for catching the planets, especially the bright ones, with a good level of details.

The technic also works for terrestrial objects.

    Interesting discussion!

I used to have a Canon Powershot which had great macro focus (~1cm!!). I now have a Olympus PEN E-P3, which is great for most stuff, but not for macro with its stock lens (14-42mm Zuiko). I tried to reverse mount a Pentax lens (with 49mm-reverse to Micro4/3 converter), but because the focal distance is shorter, it didn't magnify enough. In the end I bought close-up filters, which give a reasonable result. One of the benefits is that the lens doesn't get in the way of the flash. And indeed, I normally use some white cardboard to reflect the flash.
