I use an old version of Eagle. it isn't perfect, but it is the most productive package I've tried - and I've tried many packages.

For 2D design can I suggest Inkscape, ideal if you plan on Laser cutting ...

Fritzing for some basic PCB design, Fusion 360 for 3D modeling and Inkscape for 2D mostly laser cutting..

I have used Inkscape for illustrations but not really tried it for CAD. It's nice to have things like dimensions, fillets etc.

For the laser cut numbers on the TopsyTurvy clock I used LibreDraw.
