Hi Ben,
Would it be possible to build a combination of all previous nintendo handheld consoles into one console? This would allow a device to play all versions/generations of pokemon which would be awesome.
Thanks
Martin

Not Ben, but I could give a short explanation in laymans terms;
It would require a 3DS and a Gameboy Advance SP board at best. (The advance can run both GB games as GBA, whereas the NDS lite, arguably the smallest GBA board, can only run GBA + it's smaller than the GBA non-SP board).
In theory, all it would acquire would be a case mashed with 2 boards and a switch to switch between the two systems. The biggest challenge would be to combine it to 1 screen because of likely different display drivers. This is not terribly exciting on camera, is very likely to fail on the software/driver side and a handheld episode has been made with the raspberry pi which would include the interesting bits (case design, fit of the components) without possible insurmountable software/driver compatibility issues, which again, cannot be shown visually on a camera.
Then again on your issue, Nintendo did remake the RBY-GSC series to be compatible with the new generations, as they broke the line at RSE - which have been remade now in return to be compatible on the 3DS system without GBA slot. Now in the same line it is not unthinkable FireRed and LeafGreen will be remade AGAIN to fit the system, so effectively all generations will be playable on the 3DS system. The last line being speculation only of course.
Also, it is not unthinkable when all the intricacies of the 3DS have been uncovered, you will be able to play the classic games in an emulator on the 3DS, just like there has been emulators for the NDS as well. Or play it all on the computer, as Citra (the 3DS emulator) is making steady progress in emulating the 3DS.
